The CU Boulder English Department offers wide ranging MA, MFA, and PhD programs, allowing students to work alongside faculty and fellow students to specialize in all areas of literature, theory, cultural studies, and creative writing. In addition to academics, the English graduate program prides itself on a particularly strong community, making for an experience both socially and professionally enriching.

Centers for advanced study include the Center for British and Irish Studies, the Center for the American West, the Media Archaeology Lab, and the RAP Lab for the Study of Popular Culture. Students interested in combining their studies with another discipline may pursue programs in Film Studies, History, and Women & Gender Studies, along with others.

Standard time to complete the PhD in Literature is five years (10 semesters). The first three semesters are devoted to fulfilling course and language requirements. Students spend the fourth preparing for the Ph.D. qualifying examination, taken sometime during their third year. Once completed, students advance to candidacy and devote their final semesters to researching and writing the prospectus and dissertation.
