English Major Degree Requirements
English Major-Literature Track: In order to declare English as your major, you must attend a “New English Major Meeting”; sign up at the Academic Advising Center website under “Change my Major Meeting.”
English Major-Creative Writing Track: Admission to the creative writing program is not automatic. Students must have completed at least 6 hours of writing within the program before being considered; for transfer students, 3 hours of creative writing can be transferred in. In addition, they must submit two copies of a manuscript (at least 7 poems, 20 pages of fiction, or a short stage or screen play) to the admissions committee for approval. Students should apply no later than the second semester of their junior year. See below for a link to a CW Minor checklist.
Creative Writing Minor:
It is highly recommend that you have already declared a primary major before declaring the Creative Writing minor. To declare you must attend a 15 minute new-minor meeting with an English adviser which are held Mondays at 9 AM in Hellems 08A or Thursdays at 3 PM in Hellems 08 (west basement of Hellems – come early, the offices are hard to find!)
