Jordan Alexander Stein earned a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz and his Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University. His research on early American literature involves work on religion (including the special issue of Early American Literature he co-edited with Justine S. Murison in 2010), print (including a forthcoming collection on Early African American Print Culture in Theory and Practice co-edited with Lara Langer Cohen), and sexuality (including essays in ESQ and American Literature, the latter of which received Honorable Mention for the 2009 Foerster Prize). In 2009–10, he held an NEH postdoctoral fellowship at the Library Company of Philadelphia to complete a book on the development of the novel in the Protestant Atlantic.
